A Remote Online Notary (RON) is a Notary Public who notarizes documents electronically but remotely.\u00a0 Notary Public and signer are in two different locations.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”What is electronic notarization (e-notarization) and remote notarization?” tab_id=”1640632087807-72662d98-fc5e”][vc_column_text]Electronic notarization is a process whereby a notary affixes an electronic notary signature and seal information to an electronic document (such as a PDF or Word document). Once affixed to the electronic document, the document is rendered tamper evident such that unauthorized attempts to alter the document will be evident to relying parties. The Electronic Notary also must keep an electronic register of each act performed.\u00a0 E-notarization can be performed in person but the document is held electronically.<\/p>\n

With remote notarization, a signer personally appears before the Notary at the time of the notarization using audio-visual technology over the internet instead of being physically present in the same room. Remote online notarization is also called webcam notarization, online notarization or virtual notarization.\u00a0 The Notary Public is required to be in their commissioned state at the time of notarization, but the signer can be located anywhere in the world.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”What is the difference between an e-notorization and pen and paper notarization?” tab_id=”1640632214651-c994003c-8dd3″][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n

The only real difference is the tool used to perform the notarial act. In a traditional paper notarization, a pen and a rubber stamp are the tools of the notary\u2019s trade. For an electronic notarization, the notary must use a computer and appropriate computer software and\/or hardware.<\/p>\n

Generally speaking, all other steps and procedures of notarization remain the same. The signer appears before the notary to request a notarization, and the notary identifies the signer, completes a notarial certificate and affixes the electronic notary signature and seal.<\/p>\n

While the signer must still appear personally before an Electronic Notary, beginning July 1, 2012, an approved Virginia Electronic Notary may perform acts online using audio-video conference technology, known as remote online notarization.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

In addition, the Full Faith and Credit Clause of the US Constitution requires each state respect the \u201cpublic acts, records, and judicial proceedings of every other state.\u201d[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Are video sessions recorded?” tab_id=”1640632301695-bcbc60c9-29fc”][vc_column_text]Yes. Please be advised that audio-video conference will be recorded in compliance with Virginia law VOC \u00a7 47.1-2. A person’s identity is verified online using two identity proofing methods: Knowledge Based Authentication (KBA) and Credential Analysis.<\/strong><\/p>\n

KBA<\/strong> requires the signer to answer a series of computer-generated questions based on the signer’s personal history, credit and financial information.\u00a0 It will usually be 5 questions that the signer will only have a short period of time to answer.\u00a0 A signer must answer the questions correctly to connect to the notary.<\/p>\n

For credential analysis<\/strong>, the RON platform will scan the ID presented by the signer and analyze the information on the ID for authenticity.<\/p>\n

Virginia remote notaries are also allowed to use personal knowledge , biometrics and credible witnesses as an ID verification method.<\/p>\n
